Payouts are on the way from a $95 million class-action lawsuit settled by Apple.
As AFROTECH™ previously reported, Apple was hit with a class-action lawsuit in December 2024 over its virtual assistant Siri. Plaintiffs expressed concern that Siri was listening to their conversations on their iPhones and Apple Watches without their permission after it was activated unintentionally. Reuters reported that the technology is activated by “hot words” such as “Hey, Siri.”
Plaintiffs also claimed that information from those conversations was shared with third parties, such as advertisers, per the outlet. Examples provided by two plaintiffs included receiving ads from Siri after mentioning Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden restaurants, as well as another plaintiff’s instance of receiving an ad for a brand-name surgical treatment that was discussed privately with a doctor, Reuters reported.
“Siri has been engineered to protect user privacy from the beginning,” Apple said in a previous statement, according to NBC 5 Chicago. “Siri data has never been used to build marketing profiles and it has never been sold to anyone for any purpose.”
Apple did agree to settle the class-action civil lawsuit for $95 million, which was approved in October 2025 by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey S. White, according to a Scott+Scott press release. Reuters noted that the company did not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
“We are pleased with the Court’s approval of this landmark settlement. This was a complex case brought on behalf of thousands of consumers and we are excited to have brought it successfully over the finish line,” said Erin Green Comite, a partner at Scott+Scott, which represented the class, per the press release.
Who Qualifies
Payments are projected to be released Friday, Jan. 30, NBC 5 Chicago reported. Those who qualify are anyone who purchased or owned devices such as Siri-enabled iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, HomePod, iPod Touch or Apple TV from Sept. 17, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2024, and Siri activated unintentionally “during a conversation intended to be confidential or private,” according to the settlement website.
How Much Will You Receive?
Settlement class members were able to submit up to five devices, and those with “valid claims shall receive a pro rata portion of the Net Settlement Amount for a Class Payment of up to a cap of $20 per Siri Device,” reads the settlement website. People could receive up to $100, but that amount could be more or less, depending on the number of valid claims, WGN-9 reported.
Where Can You File?
If you did not already file a claim by July 2025, it is too late to file, according to the outlet.
Payments have already begun rolling out to claimants. WGN-9 shared that some Reddit users claim they received $40.10 for five Apple devices, while others claim $24.06 or $16.04.
