There’s no end in sight for former NFL player Terrence Murphy in the business world.
As AFROTECH™ previously told you, Murphy has a real estate portfolio and has sold more than 70 properties in transactions totaling over $1 million each. He has also invested in Hello Alice, Numerade, Stage Ten, and many others through his investment company, Terrence Murphy Companies.
Synergy Sports Capital
He previously told AFROTECH™ that he has acquired or invested in 110 companies through Terrence Murphy Companies. Now, he is teaming up with former athlete Reggie Bush to lead the newly launched Synergy Sports Capital (Synergy). According to a press release, the $150 million private equity investment firm acquires and operates stakes in “high-growth emerging leagues, building integrated platforms across team ownership, real estate, media, and operations to compound long-term enterprise value.”
“We [Reggie and I] want to invest in emerging leagues and teams with controlling majority stakes versus minority, passive stakes,” Murphy told The Athletic. “Plus, we want to be able to direct the outcome, be involved, build the enterprise, and that right now is only possible in emerging leagues. It’s a perfect thesis and time for us, and it just happens to be at the same time that women’s teams and leagues are just growing and scaling at an all-time high.”
The newly launched venture has already announced its investment in League One Volleyball’s (LOVB) Salt Lake City team in Utah, acquiring its operating rights, according to a press release. Utah is a hub for volleyball talent with nearly 1,000 athletes competing across local LOVB youth clubs and NCAA Division I programs such as BYU, Utah, and Utah State, in addition to programs at Utah Valley, Southern Utah, Utah Tech, and Weber State, the press release notes.
“Salt Lake has everything you want in a winning organization — a talented team with great chemistry, a passionate and growing sports market, and a culture that values grit and competitiveness,” said Murphy in the news release. “As a volleyball dad, this sport means a lot to me personally, and the opportunity to help build something special here made this the right fit. Our goal is to create one of the toughest home-court environments in the league.”
Stephanie Alger, chief growth officer of League One Volleyball, commented:
“Synergy is exactly the kind of ownership group we look to partner with as LOVB grows. They understand both the opportunity in professional women’s volleyball and what it takes to build successful teams, combining athlete leadership with strong investment experience.”
