For generations, Black communities have used adversity as fuel for innovation. We’ve built businesses, defined cultures, and pioneered movements that have reshaped industries and expanded what’s possible. That same spirit of innovation has the power to change how we approach one of our most important community conversations: HIV prevention and awareness.

Knowing your status isn’t just about access to healthcare. Because when awareness increases, so does our collective ability to care for one another. That’s the driving force behind Care for the Culture, a community-centered HIV awareness initiative designed to close the gap between education, access, and action.

By meeting Black Americans where they are, the initiative is making conversations around HIV and sexual health more approachable, more relevant, approachable, and less stigmatized. And that work remains as urgent as ever. According to AIDSVu’s 2023 HIV surveillance data, nearly half of all new HIV diagnoses among women occur among Black women. Likewise, HIV.gov reports that Black men who have sex with men accounted for 35% of new HIV diagnoses in 2022.

These numbers reflect the lived realities of our communities, such as friends, families and coworkers, reminding us that awareness is about far more than simply sharing information. It’s about building trust, expanding access, and creating spaces where people feel seen, informed, and empowered to take ownership of their health. That is the kind of community Care for the Culture is helping to build, and this November, that mission is coming to AFROTECH Conference (ATC) in Houston.

For years, AFROTECH has been more than a technology conference. It’s become the premiere gathering for Black innovators, founders, investors, executives, creatives, and professionals come together to imagine what’s next. The conversations may begin with artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and emerging technology, but they’ve always been grounded in something deeper: building stronger futures for Black communities. And stronger futures require healthy communities.

THE FUTURE OF INNOVATION INCLUDES OUR HEALTH

Throughout the conference, attendees will step into Status: Updated, an ecosystem of interactive experiences that transforms difficult conversations about HIV awareness and prevention into open ones.

Instead of leading with lectures or overwhelming attendees with statistics, the activation will lead with a bevy of creative, tech-forward, and educationally-focused touch points—including an art installation, Health Stack Lounge and Pavilion takeover, and live mural painting—designed to spark authentic reactions, challenge common misconceptions, and create moments where learning feels less like a lesson and more like a dialogue.

At ATC, caring for the culture isn’t only about supporting Black businesses or creating the next groundbreaking company; it’s also about helping to protect one another and engaging in dialogue that too often goes unspoken. Because caring for the community is just as essential to our future as innovation itself.

BRINGING CARE FOR THE CULTURE TO AFROTECH

The Houston activation builds on the first phase of the partnership, which debuted during this year’s BETX Weekend, inclusive of the BET Awards. There, cultural leaders engaged in meaningful conversations about HIV awareness and prevention, knowing their status, and what caring for the culture means to them.

That energy will continue in Houston. At AFROTECH, attendees won’t simply engage with an activation. They’ll become part of a larger movement to redefine what caring for the culture looks like in practice.

Centering cultural care is one of the most powerful forms of innovation, extending far beyond what we build in a lab or boardroom. This kind of innovation re-centers human dignity, empathy, and trust. It recognizes that some of the most transformative solutions emerge not only from traditional tech spaces, but from community itself.

Community as its own form of social technology acknowledges that not every variable can be captured in a spreadsheet or measured on a dashboard. Some insights can only be revealed through partnership, proximity, and authentic human connection. If the goal is to truly care for the culture, then prioritizing sexual health, HIV awareness, and access to trusted information is not separate from innovation. It is innovation, with the power to strengthen communities in ways the world can no longer afford to ignore.
