Black News Channel is here to shake things up! The platform has just expanded its reach more than 20-fold in the past seven months, reports The Wall Street Journal. This growth comes as a result of its new chief executive’s plan to shake up the cable-TV news landscape by providing an alternative that looks through the lens of Black Americans. After taking over in July 2020, Chief Executive Princell Hair has struck distribution with AT&T Inc.’s DirecTV, Dish Network Corp., Comcast Corp.’s Xfinity, and others. Grace Moore isn’t your average 12-year-old. She’s making history as one of the youngest composers for the New York Philharmonic. According to Pix11 , Moore is a seventh-grade student at Poly Prep in Dyker Heights, a small neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. She began playing the piano at age two and immediately fell in love. Moore is a member of the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program, an after-school program that exposes students — as young as 8-years-old — to the orchestra, per Because of Them We Can (BOTWC). Since joining the program, Moore has had the chance to create a piece of music that debuted this past October. Not only was her talent on display for the entire world to see, but she made history in the process as one of their youngest composers ever. “Every child has the ability to be creative and tell their story,” says Gary Padmore, director of the Very Young Composers program. On Feb. 10, the Black News Channel (BNC) launched in select markets across the U.S. making it the only Black news station in the nation. According to a press release, the broadcasting station was founded by J.C. Watts, Jr. and Bob Brillante. BNC — based in Tallahassee, FL — is dedicated to “culturally specific, intelligent programming that is informative, educational, inspiring, and empowering to its audience,” as stated in their press release . As an alternative to other national news broadcasting stations, the BNC will be the nation’s only provider of 24/7 news coverage dedicated to covering the unique perspective of African American communities.
